Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

What is it?

​

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a form of treatment that encourages individuals to accept the emotions they are experiencing and commit to moving through them. It is an action focused psychotherapy and seeks to increase psychological flexibility- a term that refers to adapting thoughts and behaviors to align with values and goals. Homework is often given between sessions to help clients actively work toward their treatment objectives.

ACT is based on the theory that it is painful to suppress emotions and that clients can simultaneously change their behavior and accept their psychological reality. Over time, this results in improved emotional states. Therapists aim to help clients increase mindfulness, become aware of their self-talk, and practice more optimistic behavior.

When is ACT effective?

ACT can help improve any of the following concerns:

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Depression

  • Obsessive Compulsive Behavior (OCD)

  • Disordered Eating

  • Problems related to substance misuse

  • Stress

If you are currently receiving mental health treatment, check with your therapist about adding ACT into your treatment plan. They will be able to answer any questions you may have and can refer you to someone qualified in ACT if they are not. If you are not connected with a mental health provider, please call our Client Services Coordinator to receive more information and potentially set up an appointment with someone trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

Your first few ACT sessions will give you a better understanding of this therapeutic approach and provide a chance to discuss the presenting concern and what strategies have not been working to manage it. A therapist will work with you to identify your goal, values, and patterns of self-talk. After a few weeks, you can expect to learn mindfulness exercises and begin work accepting even painful realities. Over time, clients will grow in psychological flexibility and improve their quality of life.
