Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) 

 

What is it?
 

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT is a form of psychotherapy commonly used to treat a wide variety of issues clients may seek treatment for. It centers around the basic principle that thoughts, emotion, and behavior are all interconnected. Therapists using CBT work with the client to find interventions that target each of those components and thereby make an impact on overall wellbeing. Individuals experience change when they are able to effectively identify and control their thoughts, emotions, or behaviors.

 

CBT has been recognized as an effective treatment for a range of mental and emotional health issues. It provides clients with a sense of control over their life and helps them challenge automatic negative beliefs. As such, CBT is one of the most widely practiced approaches used in talk-therapy to both manage symptoms and treat deeper issues.


What can it help with?
Your therapist may use a CBT approach to treat any of the following:

  • Anxiety

  • Anger or Aggression

  • Depression

  • Disordered Eating

  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

  • Panic Disorder

  • Phobias

  • Psychotic Disorders

  • Sexual disorders, harmful sexual behaviors & addictions

  • Sleep Problems

  • Problems related to substance misuse

  • Stress Management

If you are not yet connected with a therapist, reach out to our Client Services Coordinator to ask any questions you may have and share your interest in talking with someone qualified to practice with CBT. If you are already established with a therapist, please consult with them first. If your therapist is qualified, ask how CBT can be incorporated into your treatment plan.

Typically, if CBT is recommended, you’ll have a session with a therapist once a week or once every two weeks. During the sessions, the therapist will orient you with their approach and answer any questions you have. Then, you can begin work to analyze thoughts, feelings, and actions and identify strategies for change using CBT.
