Family Systems Therapy

What is it?

Family Systems Therapy is a talk-therapy approach that analyzes strengths and weaknesses within the context of the family unit. The premise of this theory is that when something affects one member of a family, it is likely to affect all others as well. Taking into account that individuals are undeniably impacted by their network of relationships, Family Systems Therapy works to address roles and dynamics within that network so that those relationships can flourish.

Techniques involve treating communication patterns, family roles, and unspoken rules that may be causing conflict. Often, the clients will also be asked to consider their own family of origin to discover what unspoken rules or roles may have existed that impact current relationships. The goals include increasing healthy communication, boundaries, and problem solving.

When is it used?

Individuals, couples, and families could all gain from this approach to treatment. The following are concerns that Family Systems Therapy could help with:
• Anger management problems
• Adoption
• Behavioral Problems
• Conflict
• Divorce
• Grief and loss
