Lack of Satisfying Relationships is Good Soil for Problematic Sexual Behaviors

Some thoughts from Andy Partington’s “Hope In Addiction” compiled by David Vraza MA.

People stuck in sexually compulsive behaviors tell stories of gradual mental, physical, and spiritual decay. It often begins subtly, a way of coping with dark and heavy emotions or a substitute for the lack of meaningful relationships. Addiction begins as a solution to our problems. “Addictive behaviors make life in a dark world tolerable — until they don’t. And then they make it darker still.”

Partington cites a Harvard study claiming that “strong relationships are a better predictor of physical health, longevity, and happiness than class, wealth, fame, IQ, or genetics … The people who were the most satisfied in their relationships at age  50 were the healthiest at age 80.” “Chronic isolation causes people to look for relief … to escape their feelings … a substitute for a full life.”
